Getting your lawn ready for summer

After the rather damp, miserable winter we've had, your lawn might be looking a little sad, but it's now starting to grow again with a little extra care now it will be flourishing by the summer.

Scarifying now is key to ridding the winter wears and thatch in the lawn, and can be done simply by a good raking. It is also beneficial to aerate the lawn with a garden fork and a lot prodding.

If opting for the scarifying get a good fertilizer at the ready, as well as a specialist seed blend to over seed the bald areas in the sward. We have a range of specially blended fertilisers at our new Lawn and Landscape Centre and we openly welcome you to come and discuss the options. If aerating, a good dusting of our topdressing is key prior to seeding and feeding.

We would recommend and application or our ‘Green and Black fertiliser, a proven product to treat the moss, blacken it, and feed the lawn with a good dose of Iron and green up the sward. This product is new in stock, and fast proving to be a winning product on our local soil bed. We cater for the larger lawns, commercial landscapers, as well the small lawns grown with pride.

Also, do not take too much off in one go, especially at this time of year. A light trim will make a dramatic difference - and be much quicker than a less frequent scalping.

Leatherjackets

Crane Fly ? Leatherjackets.

A small but enormous threat to you lawn.

Commonly known as daddy long legs, or crane fly; Crane flies lay their eggs in the turf in late August through September. The eggs develop into grubs (leatherjackets) through September and will live in the lawn until emerging again in July to start the cycle again as Crane flies.

Leatherjackets survive the winter by feeding on the roots of the lawn or turf that is infested, the damage to the root system leads to brown patches where the grass is unable to take in sufficient nutrients to sustain growth.

Leatherjackets are also a well received food source for birds and other grub eating wildlife, that will dig down to eat the tasty critters further exacerbating the damage to the lawn.

Treatments available.

If you have seen large numbers of crane flies in your garden or can see areas of your lawn browning off then we would recommend a treatment. Treatments are best applied now as prevention is better than the cure for this particular infestation. We will be treating in late October and early November so call now to book.

The Week at Queen Thorne

The Week at Queen Thorne

This week we have been preparing sites with topsoil deliveries ready for the turf, 300 tons to one site and 740 tons to a second site. So on the larger side of what we do.  Alongside this we have started preparing beds for over winter by adding soil conditioners. We have also order plants ready for spring stock so as to get the first bareroot plants when they become ready at the nurseries.   So these coming weeks are a time for preparation, if you put the work in now you will without doubt see huge benefits come spring.    We have also finished off creating some raised beds and raised the base of the fruit cage so as to be able to add further soil and increase nutrients to the fruit cage. We are particularly pleased with the steps that our guys on site built.

Hard Landscaping in Dorset

Hard Landscaping in Dorset

We recently completed a hard landscaping project locally that reminded us of how proud we are of our team of landscapers. The team brought the client's plans to life creating raised vegetable beds with irrigation systems, built surrounding brickwork, installed water features and laid the natural stone paths.

The detail and level of finish is the difference between a good job and a great job. The hard landscaping is softened by selective and considered planting offering interesting views across the garden.

We work on projects both large and small so if you are looking for a new terrace or a single raised bed please do think of us. Our teams of landscapers cover Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset but can travel further.
